Steven A. Gustafson
Senior Hydrologist
Manager, River Measurement,
a Division of WEST Consultants, Inc.
Vancouver, WA

As the leader of the River Measurement division of the firm, Mr. Gustafson provides hydrologic data collection services for federal, county, city, utility, tribal, and private clients throughout the US, leading the planning, design, and installation of hydrologic monitoring and flood warning stations; computing discharge and sediment records; development of stage-discharge ratings; conducting stream flow measurements - including indirect measurements of peak flow; and collecting suspended sediment, bedload, and bed material samples.

Prior to joining WEST Consultants, Inc. Mr. Gustafson served 19 years with the US Geological Survey (USGS) specializing in surface water and sediment data collection and analysis, use of hydrological instrumentation and equipment, gaging station design and construction, and hydrographic surveying. His work from 1980 to 1989 with the USGS was extremely challenging as he focused on installation and maintenance of flood/debris warning, stream gaging, and sediment monitoring networks in river basins devastated by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.  He has been in supervisory roles with the USGS, as a business owner for 10 years, and as a manager at WEST.

Over the last 37 years Mr. Gustafson has installed, operated, maintained, computed, and reviewed data for several hundred stream gaging stations, always using standard USGS procedures and state-of-the art equipment and software. He has collected thousands of discharge measurements on both large rivers and small streams.  He is an expert who can lead or assist with projects that require the collection of high quality surface water data.
