Stearns Dam Sedimentation Evaluation (OR)
WEST Consultants was contracted to conduct an analysis to characterize and estimate the volume of sediment deposits in the reach of the lower Crooked River influenced by Stearns Dam, an irrigation dam located near Prineville, Oregon. The work performed consisted of a survey of twenty-five cross sections spanning a distance of approximately one mile of the Crooked River, sediment sampling and laboratory analysis of the major sediment deposits within the reservoir reach, Wolman pebble counts, and resulting data analysis.

The study also defined potential hydraulic and sediment transport impacts of proposed removal or modification scenarios for Stearns Dam. Potential impacts associated with modifying the dam include headcut erosion of the channel bed, bank erosion, and downstream channel aggradation due to the release of stored sediments.
