WEST is pleased to welcome George Sabol, Ph.D., P.E. to our Tempe, Arizona office. Dr. Sabol brings more than 40 years of experience in hydrology, hydraulics, and structure design in the Rocky Mountain West and internationally. He is a recognized technical leader in flood hydrology, having prepared several manuals and guidelines for regulatory agencies. That expertise has resulted in his participation as a technical lead and reviewer in the development of probable maximum precipitation estimates using site-specific and regional criteria and conducting probable maximum flood studies. He has managed major dam repair and rehabilitation engineering projects for both water conservation and hydropower generation. He has also served on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission board of consultants to industry.

His engineering practice focuses on hydraulic structures and their impacts on rivers. His experience includes dams, levees, irrigation works, diversions, water intakes and pumping plants, pipelines, bridges, and river stabilization measures. He has managed and led multidisciplinary design teams for dam safety repairs and modifications, the repair of hydropower facilities, dam failure analyses, levee failure analyses, irrigation works improvements, and flood control projects. He was a member of the civil engineering faculty of New Mexico State University and was a research engineer on fluvial systems and sediment transport for the US Geological Survey. He is the author of more than 70 publications and engineering reports.

Dr. Sabol holds a doctorate in civil engineering (hydrology) and master’s degree (hydraulics) from Colorado State University and is a registered professional engineer in Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Wyoming. He is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a member of the United States Society on Dams, the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, the United States Committee on Irrigation and Drainage, the Association of State Floodplain Managers, the Arizona Floodplain Management Association, and the Chi Epsilon National Civil Engineering Honor Society.

When asked for a comment about joining WEST, Dr. Sabol shared:

“A friend told me a long time ago that old hydrologists never die, they just runoff. So, after about 50 years in water, I ran off to join the water wizards at WEST. Maybe my friend was right on!”
