The Southwest’s premier event for hydrology and water resources research, management, and public policy
The 2021 AHS Symposium will be held September 15–17 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Phoenix/Tempe. Featuring a keynote and guest speakers, talks, poster sessions, workshops, fun social events, and more. The Symposium is a great opportunity to network, catch up with old friends and colleagues, and learn about the latest developments in water science, technology, and policy. The event will be hosted by the Phoenix chapter of AHS, with special pricing available to students, AHS members, and early registrants.
Technical Session B2.1 Thursday, September 16th, 1:30-2:00
With the growing prevalence of 2D hydraulic modeling, there are a number of new challenges that we are facing in how to implement the results and connect to existing studies that were done previously using less detailed techniques. Case in point: the Desert Mountain Area Drainage Master Study (ADMS), conducted by WEST Consultants, Inc. for the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, with the help of the city of Scottsdale and the town of Carefree. This project involves delineation of over 30 miles of detailed 2D floodplains along four separate watercourses. Each of those watercourses are upstream of existing FEMA floodplains that were developed using 1D modeling techniques. This presentation is going to discuss the challenges of how we are tying in the 2D floodplains to the 1D floodplains.
Part of the challenges of tying in a 2D study to a 1D study is that the tie-in must work for the floodplain and the floodway. For this study it was also found that a short section of the floodway had to be reanalyzed using 2D modeling techniques. New floodway analysis was completed in accordance with current FEMA guidelines.
